How to raise your children the God-style

by | Oct 30, 2023 | Spiritual Growth

 Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Raising children is a remarkable privilege and a significant responsibility bestowed upon us by God. As parents, we are entrusted with the sacred task of nurturing our precious children and imparting into their lives the profound love of Jesus Christ.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of raising children for the Lord, emphasizing the values of trust, worship, love, and obedience.

Instilling Trust in God:

One of our primary roles as parents is to guide our children in learning to trust in God. Teaching them to have faith and belief in the divine plan can provide a solid foundation for their lives. Encourage them to turn to God in times of uncertainty and to rely on His guidance. (Draw insight from biblical stories to your children).
One of my favorite Bible stories about trusting God is the story of Joshua. Joshua is relatable because God had to remind him so many times to “be strong and courageous” which leads me to believe that Joshua struggled with courage and probably trust as well. Through God’s strength, Joshua was able to lead the Children of Israel into the Promised Land, conquer their enemies, and remain faithful. Joshua’s example inspires us to trust in God’s guidance.

Fostering Worship and Prayer:

It’s essential to instill in our children a habit of worship and prayer. Show them the beauty of communing with God and help them understand the significance of spiritual practices.
(1 Samuel 2:11) – Under the supervision of Eli, Samuel faithfully served at the tabernacle. He was faithful to God from a very young age and also grew in favor of the people of Israel who met him when they came to worship.

Samuel grew up to be a rather unusual person; he was a prophet, a priest, and a king of sorts. He spoke God’s word to the people, acted as a priest before the Lord, and led the people in all kinds of ways. Samuel was the one who anointed the first king of Israel, Saul, and the greatest king of Israel, David. Samuel was unafraid to speak up against King Saul’s unfaithfulness and do difficult things when required for the service of his God. Like Eli when you nuture worship and prayer on to your children these habits will help them build a personal relationship with their Creator.

Teaching Love and Compassion:

As parents, we are called to teach our children to love others with the love of God. Emphasize the importance of kindness, compassion, and empathy in their interactions with people. Help them understand that showing love is a reflection of God’s love in their lives.
Teach his love – he is “full of compassion” (Psalm 116:5), “a God of justice” (Psalm 50:6) and that “he shields all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30).

God’s undying and selfless love for His creation — and his willingness to do anything to save, help and sustain that creation — provides an example pointing to fathers on how they love and care for their families. And how God truly is a good, good father

Encouraging Obedience and Honor:

Teaching children to honor and obey their parents is not only a valuable life lesson but also a reflection of their obedience to God’s commandments. This fosters discipline and respect in their character.
Give them example of Absalom who was a promising youth and a handsome one. But due to his disobedience towards his father his life left suspended in mid-air.
-2 Samuel 13-18

Being Their Support System:

Children face challenges and difficulties as they grow. As parents, we need to be there for them – to listen, to comfort, and to offer guidance. Let them know that they can always turn to you when life deals them painful blows.

Share in the joy of your children’s achievements and special moments in their lives. These positive experiences can strengthen the bond between you and help them appreciate the good things God provides.
In the journey of life, children need cheerleaders. Be their biggest supporters, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and passions. Let them know that you believe in their potential.

Children are definitely seeking praise. They need to receive praise from their own parents. Without it, they will seek after praise from their peers for wrong things they do. They will find praise somehow and somewhere. If righteous praise doesn’t come from their parents, they will get unrighteous praise from some other source.

Raising children for the Lord is a calling that demands devotion, patience, and prayer.
As parents, we have the opportunity to nurture our children in the ways of faith, love, and obedience. By relying on God’s guidance, we can raise our children to become men and women who trust in Him and in His precious Son, Jesus Christ.

Remember, childhood is fleeting, and we have but one chance to shape their hearts and souls for the future. Let us embrace this divine responsibility with love and faith.
